Boston University’s main campus is three miles long. Commonwealth Avenue, one of the city’s main highways runs straight through the campus. There is no real separation between campus and town. Resident halls have stores and restaurants on their bottom floors. Brownstones house campus offices and apartments. The sound and movement of the city is always present.
Like most of the Boston universities, Boston University is a cut above. The students had to work hard to get this far and many of them have a pretty good idea of what they want to do with their lives. The academics are intense, but most of these students are here because they are excellent students.
The students at Boston University represent the whole country as well as the rest of the world. Unlike most universities, the majority of students here don’t live close by. The reputation of the Boston universities bring in students from everywhere. It’s not unusual for most students to stay on campus for Thanksgiving. Most students would have to fly home for the weekend.
The students also represent every walk of life. A majority of the students are middle class. Financial aid, student jobs, and loans make it possible for most student wit the grades to attend.
Visibility on a campus this large is tough, but it is even harder here. The usual kiosks for posters and other advertisements are not available here, and the city is always competing for the students attention. So we take to the streets. We try to take advantage of what little public space is available. We are also trying to create events that will catch the attention of the campus paper. Most of all, we work to meet as many students as possible. Word of mouth is always the most powerful advertisement.
